Key Findings from the Report

A new study released by Swim England evidences the health and well-being benefits of swimming, showing that the unique benefits of water make it the perfect place for people of all ages to exercise, particularly those with long-term health conditions.

  • Longer Life for Swimmers: Swimming lowers the risk of early death by 28%.
  • Supports Older Adults: Regular swimming helps older people stay mentally and physically fit.
  • Helps Children Develop Skills: Participation in swimming lessons helps children develop physical, cognitive, and social skills more quickly.
  • Safe and Cost-Effective: Swimming is a viable, safe, and cost-effective option for healthcare professionals to recommend to patients.

A Call for Greater Awareness in Healthcare

Swim England commissioned the independent report to raise awareness within the health profession that swimming is a viable option to signpost patients, especially those with long-term conditions.
Jane Nickerson, Swim England CEO, said:

It is evident from the report that swimming has enormous potential to support the health and wellbeing of the nation. The unique properties of water mean that unlike other activities, no one is restricted from taking part. The report particularly highlights the benefits of swimming and aquatic activities for people with mental health concerns or problems with their joints and muscles.

She also noted the need for further research and stated that Swim England will use these findings to develop their Health and Wellbeing Model and continue training health practitioners on the benefits of swimming.

The Need for More Research

Mike Farrar, Swim England Group Board Chairman and former CEO of the NHS Confederation, highlighted:

For too long, national guidelines have concentrated on the cardiovascular benefits of exercise for healthy people, rather than on those who are less fit or have long-term health conditions. Activities like swimming have the potential to be a game-changer in supporting the nation’s health, especially when cuts to services mean less money for long-term care.

Swim England and health leaders are calling on the health and sports sectors to invest in further research on the impact of physical activity, including swimming, on mental health and long-term conditions.

Groundbreaking Evidence from the Swimming and Health Commission

The report was developed under the Swimming and Health Commission chaired by Professor Ian Cumming, Chief Executive of Health Education England. He described the report as:

A ground-breaking collection of papers that identify striking and robust evidence for the significant improvements in health and quality of life that swimming produces.
